After the snow in October it's nice to see the sun shining for the start of November. The ground around most trees and shrubs hasn’t frozen yet so it is extremely important to water thoroughly and deeply. This will increase over wintering success as well as ensuring that the plants won’t dehydrate in the winter. If you have put your hoses away use buckets to give the plants a good drink before the ground freezes. The warm weather will allow you to finish any clean up in your yard and cover up any tender plants for the winter.
In my travels throughout the city I have noticed several trees still hanging on to their leaves. Hopefully with a little bit of warmth and sunshine some more leaves will fall. The process of a plant retaining its leaves when they would normally shed is marcescence. From what I have read whatever leaves are retained through the winter will be shed when buds break in the spring.
With the Christmas season fast approaching it's time to start thinking about dressing up the house. I've already seen some great light displays on trees around the city. The stores all have their Christmas displays up so you don't need to look too hard for inspiration these days! You can take advantage of the warm weather and get your outdoor urns and planters done up with fresh greens.
