Pesticides have been at the forefront of debate over that last few years. The City of Calgary was looking at passing a bylaw that would ban the use of pesticides by homeowners. In December the bylaw was defeated.

This can be seen as a good thing as pesticide bans have proven to be ineffective. Although pesticides have become a hot topic they do have their place in the landscape. When looking to control pests within a landscape we need to look at Integrated Pest Management (IPM) which is an environmentally sensitive approach to pest management by incorporating a variety of different techniques to control pests. The primary goal of IPM is to solve pest problems with minimal impact on human health, the environment and non-target organisms. IPM is not organic and in certain cases the use of a pest control product is necessary because environmentally friendly methods aren’t appropriate or effective. The good news is that pesticides have been evolving and there are a variety of organic, low toxicity choices available for use.

As a homeowner you will be able to keep your yard and garden at their best with some use of pesticides and other lawn care products to maintain them.
