It looks like we have finally gotten away from all that snow and we can now start enjoying spring here in Calgary. Our greenhouse is starting to look full, the tree lot is open, and our staff is in place to serve you the customer.
Things that you will want to start doing now;
- Rake (or power rake) away all your dead grass, (this should only be done once the area is dry,)
- Because of the all the moisture that we’ve received over the long winter, aerating your lawn is important, (this should only be done once the area is dry,)
- Fertilize your yard with So-Green ULTRA™ TURF FERTILIZER 20-0-5 to get it off to a good start,
- Clean out your gardens and perennial beds, add necessary additives such as Sunnyside’s Own Professional Mix, Sunnyside’s Own Steer Manure, Sunnyside’s Own Peat Moss, Sea Soil, and/or Green Earth Compost,
- With the rabbits, squirrels, and deer out looking for food, protect your garden by applying an environmentally friendly product like Green Earth Blood Meal 12-0-0 (non-rain resistant)or Plantskydd® Deer Repellent (rain resistant),
- Prune your trees and shrubs where necessary (see our brochure on Pruning Trees and Shrubs), and
- Most importantly, ensure that your plants are getting enough water.
As well, don’t jump the gun and start pulling out your trees, shrubs or, perennials. They are still trying to get their roots settled and you will start seeing them flourishing soon.
If you’re planning on starting your garden early, be aware that we are still due for some cold spells. You will want to keep an eye on the weather forecast and protect your plants when needed. Ideally this can be done using frost blankets. Talk to our experts on how best to protect your plants.
Because this winter was unusual, we are expecting a lot of different issues to pop up that the everyday customer may not have experienced yet. Be sure to test out our experts and ask them your questions; this can be done here. That is what we are here for.
Looking forward to seeing you and happy gardening.
