What is the HRTC?
The HRTC is a non-refundable tax credit for work performed or goods acquired in respect to an eligible dwelling (house).
What is the eligibility period?
The credit will be based on eligible home renovation expenditures for work performed or goods acquired any time between January 27, 2009 and February 1, 2010.
How is the credit calculated?
It is a 15% credit that may be claimed on the portion of eligible expenses exceeding $1000, but no more than $10000. The maximum tax credit you can receive is $1350.

- Laying new sod
- Purchasing trees, shrubs and perennials
- Retaining walls, pathways and decks
- Ponds and waterfalls
- Garden sheds
- Irrigation and lighting systems
- Professional landscape design service
- Professional landscape contractors service
What is not eligible?
- Annual & tropical plants
- Furniture and appliances
- Purchase of tools
- Cleaning carpets
- Maintenance contracts (snow removal, lawn care, pool cleaning etc)
To be eligible, expenditures incurred in relation to a renovation or alternation to an eligible dwelling (or land that forms part of the eligible dwelling) must be of and enduring nature and integral to the dwelling, and includes the cost of labour and professional services, building materials, fixtures, rentals, and permits.
Who is eligible for the credit?
Eligibility for the HRTC is family based. A family will generally be considered to consist of an individual or an individual and his or her spouse or common-law partner, including children who will be under 18 years of age, at the end of 2009. A family will be allowed a single credit that may be shared within the family.
*Taxpayers can claim the HRTC when filing their 2009 Tax Return.
