Adaptable annuals can beautify nearly any spot in your home landscape. Proper plant selections can provide cool weather colour, brighten a shady spot, dress up a hot dry location or accent an open, sunny area. Many annuals do well in a variety of conditions

Hot dry sites can prove difficult as some plants are not able to cope with lack of moisture and the heat. Plants that thrive in these conditions usually exhibit some of the following characteristics:

  • grey, silver or blue leaves that are covered with fine hairs or have a waxy surface will deflect sun rays
  • plants with fragrant foliage exude volatile oils which form a haze around the plant and acts as a sun blocker
  • succulent plants have thick fleshy leaves that store water to prevent dehydration perform best in a soil that is not overly fertile.
